If your device is not showing in Find My, the problem is usually one of a few simple things. The device isn’t signed into the same Apple Account with Find My turned on. Or it was removed from the account. Or, for a family member’s device, Family Sharing isn’t set up correctly. Start with the missing device itself, then work through the account checks.

Check the Apple Account and Find My Setting

Verify the Sign-In and Toggle

The most common reason for a missing device is a sign-in mismatch. A device appears in the Find My list only if it is signed in to the same Apple Account with Find My turned on. So begin by verifying both conditions on the missing device itself.

  1. Pick up the device that isn’t showing. Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My [device].
  2. Make sure the toggle for Find My [device] is switched on. If it’s off, turn it on.
  3. Check the Apple Account shown at the top of Settings. It must match the account you’re using to view Find My on your other device or on iCloud.com/find.

If the device is signed into a different account, sign out and sign in with the correct one. Then turn on Find My [device] if it wasn’t already. The device should appear in your Find My list within a few minutes.

Device Was Removed from the Account

Another reason for a missing device is that it was removed from the account. A device removed with the “Remove This Device” option disappears from the list until it signs in again. If you or someone else used that option in Find My settings, the device will vanish immediately.

To bring it back, sign the device back into the same Apple Account. On the missing device, go to Settings > [your name] and sign in with the correct Apple Account. Then turn on Find My [device] as described above. Once it reconnects, it will reappear in the list.

Family Member’s Device Not Appearing

Confirm Family Sharing and Location Sharing

If you’re looking for a family member’s device and it’s not showing, the issue is usually Family Sharing setup. Family members’ devices appear only through Family Sharing, which supports up to 6 people, and only if they share their location. Here’s what to check:

  • Make sure the family member is part of your Family Sharing group. You can verify this in Settings under your account or in the Family Sharing settings on an iPhone or iPad.
  • The family member must have Find My turned on for their device (same steps: Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My [device]).
  • They also need to share their location with the family group. In their Find My settings, there is a toggle for location sharing with family.

Once those conditions are met, the family member’s shared device will appear under the Devices tab in the Find My app. The Find My app has People, Devices and Items tabs (plus Me). Family members’ shared devices appear under Devices. If you’re checking on iCloud.com/find, it lists devices under All Devices.

Device is Off or Outside Network Range

A device that is off and outside the Find My network window may still appear but without a current location. That means the device itself might not be truly missing from the list, it just isn’t updating. However, if the device is completely off and hasn’t sent a location recently, it can still show in the list with a “No location available” message or a last known location.

If you don’t see the device at all, it’s not this scenario. But if you see it but with no current location, that’s covered by the existing article on devices not updating. For a device that’s truly not in the list, work through the account and Family Sharing checks above.

Check Both the App and ICloud.com

Look in the Right Tab

Sometimes the device is actually there, but you’re looking in the wrong place. The Find My app has People, Devices and Items tabs (plus Me). Make sure you’re on the Devices tab. If you’re checking a family member’s device, it will appear under Devices, not under People.

You can also check iCloud.com/find from any web browser. Sign in with the same Apple Account, and look under All Devices. This gives you a second way to confirm whether the device is truly missing or just not showing in the app.
